What a payday loan costs: examples
In a 15% state like California or Michigan, borrowing $300 costs a flat fee for two weeks — the lender may not add a cent more. The spread across America is real: from $30 in Florida to $225 in Missouri for the same $300 over two weeks. In states without a fixed fee cap (Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky…), the price is set by competition: compare offers and read the fee line before signing.
The vocabulary, in plain words
- Payday loan
- A small, single-fee loan repaid in one lump on your next payday — 14 to 31 days in most states.
- Cash advance
- The industry's second name for a payday loan. Also "payday advance" or "payroll advance" — same product, same state caps.
- APR
- Annualized cost of credit. A $15-per-$100 two-week fee annualizes to ~391% APR even though you only borrow for two weeks.
- Fee cap
- The maximum fee a lender may charge, set by state statute. Same cap online and in stores.
- Rollover
- Paying a new fee to push the due date back. Most states ban or limit rollovers because they compound into debt spirals.
- Rescission
- A short statutory window (often one business day) to cancel the loan and return the principal, owing nothing.
- PAL
- Payday Alternative Loan — a federal credit-union product capped at 28% APR, the cheap cousin of a payday loan.

Online payday loans: FAQ
How much does a payday loan cost online?
The same as in a storefront: your state's fee cap applies to every channel. Most states allow $10–$30 per $100 borrowed for a two-week loan, so a $300 loan costs about $45 in a 15% state.
Can I apply online, or do I need a store?
You can apply fully online. Licensed online lenders verify your income electronically, sign you electronically, and deposit to your checking account — same caps, same laws as a storefront in your state.
What do I need to qualify?
Be 18+, a US resident with verifiable income (a job, benefits, or pensions all count), an active checking account, and a working phone or email. Payday lenders do not require good credit.
Which states allow payday loans?
This guide covers the 38 states where payday lending is legal, from Alabama to Wyoming. States not listed here — like New York, New Jersey, or Massachusetts — ban the product; the table below shows each legal state's cap.

Check My Eligibility →Disclosure. All City Payday Loan is not a lender, not a broker, and does not make credit decisions. Rates and terms are set by third-party lenders and depend on state law and the lender's underwriting; short-term loans carry APRs that may range from 35.99% to 359.99%. A payday loan is a short-term tool for a temporary cash gap — it is not a solution for long-term debt problems. Late or missed payments may result in additional fees and collection activity. Check your lender's license with your state regulator before you sign.
